Artist Bio

Lucinda Ulrich was born in 1968, in Austin, Texas (USA).

An emerging artist, Lucinda grew up in the high desert landscapes of New Mexico, influenced by the diverse art and culture of her home state.

She has a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing, Theater and Video Production from the University of New Mexico (UNM, 1991) and a Masters Degree in Secondary Education and Communicative Arts (UNM, 2009). In 2020, she went back to school at Rogue Community College (RCC)  in Medford, Oregon to formally study art and complete a Professional Pathway Certificate in Digital Media and Design (2024).

Working in a variety of styles and mediums, Lucinda creates explosions of emotion and internal perception in paintings, drawings, photography, collage, assemblage and mixed media works. Mainly an abstract expressionist, she also brings to life unique illustrations inspired by underground animators and Meow Wolf artists. Her studio art manifests the explosion of past and present in a frenzied happening.

Drawing inspiration from contemporary Native American artists such as Nevada artist Jack Malotte and New Mexico trained Frank Buffalo Hyde, Lucinda mixes disparate images and themes into a mixed media kaleidoscope of color and feeling. The Taos Moderns, specifically the work of Beatrice Mandelman, and the variety of styles practiced by German painter, Paul Klee have also shaped her direction and personal style. As a photographer, she gravitates to the work of Man Ray, Edward Weston, William Eggleston, Edward Porter and Imogen Cunningham.

Lucinda lives in Ashland, Oregon.

Artist Statement

When painting, I enter into a trance like state where universal images and splashes of color tell stories words cannot tell. In my art, I live in a world of visual emotion. When finished with a session, I am exhausted like an athlete is pleasantly tired. In this way, I reconnect with myself.

I discovered the practice of creating art at a very young age. At the tender age of 3, I was painting for hours. By the age of 5, I was experimenting with photography. I began writing poetry at 5 and novels at 7. The power of story took center stage for most of my life. While writing and directing, I still longed to paint. It called to me like a jilted lover. It wasn’t until 2020 that I finally gave myself permission to return.

Making art for me has always been a way to engage in the practice of meditative flow. While making art, time truly disappears and I am fully centered in the present moment. Art allows me to connect with the subconscious, expressing what cannot be expressed in words.

Working with paint, pastel, charcoal, collage, found objects, crayon and magic marker, a primal connection forms and the part of me that is bound by societal obligation and expectation grows quiet. The true self that was abandoned and forgotten, the child, once again emerges to breathe life into paint strokes. Without the need to follow norms or propriety or even create works of obvious meaning, the power of pure expression erupts like a happening, unplanned on the paper, surprising even me.

In bursts of color that far surpass the bleakness of everyday life with its cumbersome obligations and overcast gloom, art becomes a playground. When I create, I am fully alive. Through art, I am set free. In this way, my art is a celebration of the power of free expression.
